Ilkley Grammar School has a vibrant Citizenship department, with lots of events going on throughout the year from guest speakers to trips and theatre visits.

Year 10 students have organised two Charity Fairs so far this year. All Year 10 students are taking Citizenship GCSE. The coursework has to be done as a team, must be a practical activity and is worth 40% of their marks. The students in Year 10 divided into groups of between 4 and 6, with each group preparing a stall in support of a charity of their choice. There were a variety of activities on about 20 stalls in B Hall: chocolate fountain; raffle; cake stall; snail race; guess the number of sweets; face painting etc
Year 8 and 9 students have taken part in the magistrates mock trial competition. Round one was held at Bradford Crown court with IGS getting through to round 2 held in Leeds. Students, teachers (Mrs Fielding and Mrs Verity/Miss Fairhurst) and magistrates (Annette Hattersley and Margaret Carter) spent a great deal of time preparing cases for the overall debate.
During their Citizenship lessons, Year 7 students have been learning about the dangers of solvent abuse from Chantelle Bleau guest speakers. The Chantelle Bleau Memorial Fund was set up after the death of 16 year old Chantelle Bleau, from Baildon, who died from solvent abuse in 1997. Every week in the UK there is at least one death from Volatile Substance Abuse (VSA). The CBMF campaigns to reduce deaths from VSA both directly, through educational programmes in schools, training and awareness for parents and professionals and nationally through raising awareness about VSA in the public arena.
Ten of our Year 12 students have now completed their training with Education Bradford as peer group drugs educators. They spent 2 days of their holiday working with the Drugs Education team in Bradford, as well as time in school to prepare the lessons. They used a range of resources to help the Year 8 students understand the issues surrounding drugs use. Well done to all the students!
